When we are no longer able to change a situation -

We are challenged to change ourselves.

Therapy Services

What types of therapy do you offer?

Person-Centred Approach, Transactional Analysis, and CBT

I work from a psychodynamic perspective, based on the principle that problems and distress in the present may be related to early experiences in life.

Whether your problems are identifiable or confusing, counselling can help you deal with emotions that are difficult to understand, giving you fresh insight into your life and working to find the best way forward.

Irrespective of the type of therapy practiced, it is recognised that the most important part of any therapy is the relationship between therapist and client.

How does CBT work?

CBT allows you to explore and to have a better understanding of your thought and behavioural patterns.

Fitting the individual and the therapy is ultimately a very co-creative process. If we decide to work together we will agree, if it’s for a few sessions or on an open-ended basis.

How long do therapy sessions last?

50 minutes. You are free to end your therapy session/course whenever you choose, although it is beneficial to discuss the ending and plan for it during the sessions.

What happens in a therapy session?

Our initial session is an opportunity to describe what you would like to change in your life. You may have questions about therapy and how it works. Importantly it allows you to decide if I am the right therapist for you.

After the initial call, and the first session the sessions are treatment-based.

*A more in-depth description of the process is below.

If I’m ill or miss a session, what happens?

Once appointments are scheduled you will be expected to pay, unless you provide one week in advance notice of cancellation. This, of course, excludes emergencies and exceptional circumstances.

Therapy Step by Step

We have an initial no obligation phone call following your enquiry. Lasting 20 - 30 minutes, it is an opportunity for you to decide if you want to schedule an appointment.

We confirm the address of the therapy room or contact details, and we discuss proceeding with in-person or online/phone therapy.

To start the process

You may feel anxious about this first call, so do take a few minutes beforehand to reflect briefly on what you want to discuss and any goals you may have.

Feel assured that you’re taking the first step in your mental health journey.

At the end of the call, you’ll typically have the opportunity to schedule the first session. Make sure to have your calendar & pen or G-Cal, iCal, in front of you so you can schedule it correctly.

There will be time for you to ask me a few questions, about what you’re looking for and which area you would like help.

There is no obligation to commit if you decide against therapy with me, naturally, we may not have the connection/the therapy style you need.

A good connection ensures you are comfortable engaging with your process with me for the best experience and results that we both want.

Initial consultation

Your initial consultation is an opportunity to ask questions and voice your needs.

This session will be different from future visits, as the initial visit is a time for us to get to know each other and introduce how the process works. Future visits will be more therapeutic.

For example, in your second session, you may explore a specific symptom, problem, or past trauma you mentioned in the first session.

Getting to know each other includes providing time for you to ask me any practical and logistical questions about working together, as well as questions about my experience and therapy style.

We will go through questions like:

  • Have you attended therapy in the past?

  • What are your symptoms?

  • Do you have any mental health issues in your family history?

  • How is your home life?

  • Do you have a history of suicidal ideation?

  • Do you have a history of self-harm?

  • What do you hope to get from therapy?

  • What do you want to accomplish in sessions?

  • What brought you to therapy?

  • What do you feel is wrong in your life?

Including relevant questions about your history, your childhood, education, relationships (family, romantic, friends), your home situation, and your career.

Together we agree on the duration of your treatment and therapy sessions to allow you to manage your time and budget constraints.

We discuss the therapy methods to be employed, and particulars of patient confidentiality, and our combined availability.

After your first session.

The most important thing to do after your first therapy session is a check-in with yourself. Therapy is an incredibly individualised process, ask yourself how you felt your first session went, and explore your feelings about attending the next.

Pragmatically, we need to build trust together. This trust-building happens over several sessions. Our first session is an introduction, which is the beginning of forming a trusting relationship together.

Consider how you felt about your session with me. Did you feel comfortable talking with me? Did you feel like the two of us could work together over a long-term time frame?

Remember, a one-session cure is not realistic, you may feel a little better or relieved, but your symptoms will not immediately disappear.

Additionally, you may have some homework from me before your next session. This could be anything from a short diary throughout the week to doing a little reading that may help provide context for your next session. Remember: whatever work you do between sessions is about making you feel healthier and happier in the day today.
